The best Volkswagen Group cars for road trips, according to Vasstech Knaresborough

The back of a black Volkswagen Golf R, on a road at the top of a hill, against a yellow sunset

If your post-lockdown holiday plans look less like the French Riviera (the Mediterranean) and more like the English Riviera (Torquay), then you’ll want to drive in style.

Ever since the first Volkswagen Beetle rolled off the production line in 1948, the Volkswagen Group has been renowned for building comfortable, family cars. So, if you’re planning on hitting the open (A) roads this summer, look no further than some of the finest feats of German, Czech and Spanish engineering!

We’re kicking things off with the Volkswagen Golf R – the timeless classic hot hatch, that never goes out of style. When you’re planning on racking up big miles, you need a car that’s going to be up to the challenge.

The Golf R is fun, with all-wheel drive, 320 horsepower, and a 0-62mph time of less than five seconds. Like any golf, it’s a comfortable family car, with enough room for four adults (making a few days away with the kids a breeze) – not to mention a massive boot. Plus, the Golf R also has a driver fatigue alert, and adaptive cruise control – making it the perfect car for spending long hours on the UK’s motorways.

    Audi A1

The Audi A1 hatchback is a premium car without the premium price tag! With sharp styling and a nice interior, it’s a great small car that’s well-suited to days out with your other half (or the whole family).

With a host of engine sizes on offer (from the 1.0-litre 25 TFSI with 95 horsepower to the 2.0-litre 40 TFSI, with 200 horsepower), there’s sure to be something to suit your tastes. Plus, every version of the A1 comes with a basic safety kit, offering lane departure warnings and an emergency city braking system as standard.

    SEAT Tarraco

If adventure is calling this summer, then the SEAT Tarraco is the perfect car for you. It’s a family-friendly, practical, seven-seater. With enough room for seven, six-foot adults – it’s sure to fit you and the kids in without a hitch.
With four turbocharged engines available (two petrol, two diesel), there’s sure to be something to suit your needs – but we’d recommend the diesel options if you’re wanting to use it for towing.
From cycling to surfboarding – you can keep it all on the Tarraco’s roof rack. And, you can carry whatever else you need in its 230-litre boot (which jumps to over 700-litres if you only use five of the seven seats)!

It’s 2021, so no list of road-trip worthy cars would be complete without an EV! The Enyaq is brand new for 2021, and marks the Czech manufacturer’s first bespoke electric vehicle.

The Enyaq comes in two battery sizes:

    • Enyaq iV 60: a 58kWh battery and a range of up to 256 miles
    • Enyaq iV 80: a 77kWh battery and a range of up to 333 miles

For context, if you were setting off from Vasstech’s garage in Knaresborough, one charge with the Enyaq iV 80 could get you as far south as Torquay (315 miles), and as far north as Fort William (307 miles)!

With up to 201bhp available, and 310Nm of torque, both versions of the Enyaq are well suited to family holidays and long motorway hours.

Before you go, visit Vasstech’s garage in Knaresborough!
